Incorporating Health and Human Rights at Your School
There are many ways to bring a health and human rights perspective into your academic environment. Here are some examples of ways to get involved.
Know where you're starting
Before beginning to organize new activities, learn more about your school's relevant programs and interests. Also, be sure to sign on to bSpace to access all educational resources and contact Danielle at PHR to brainstorm options for your school.
Ideas for Involvement:
Level 1
- Host a speakers' panel.
- Organize a workshop on HHR topics or on how to get involved in HHR initiatives through internships, fellowships, or other venues.
- Show a film or PowerPoint presentation and organize a post-program discussion.
- Host a Q and A with an HHR expert.
- Talk with other PHR chapters about their work in HHR.
Level 2
- Organize a speakers series.
- Coordinate a focus group, lecture series or film matinee to supplement existing classes.
- Create a film series.
- Start a book club that focuses on HHR issues.
- Write a HHR Ed blog post for PHR's Student blog.
- Talk with faculty advisor to learn more about relevant HHR activities and resources.
Level 3
- Organize a HHR section in your library (or, if you already have many scattered resources in your library, create a "HHR Catalog" to make them easily accessible).
- Organize a health and human rights educational conference.
- Get a team together to coordinate a HHR elective (credit or noncredit). Using the models and content provided through HHR Ed, you will have all the tools needed to build a health and human rights elective in your school. You can follow the elective format laid out on bSpace.
- Create web-based interviews or mini lectures with HHR experts and make them available to the student body; add relevant reading recommendations.
If you have any additional ideas for involvement, feel free to share them with other students via the PHR Student Blog or bSpace Discussion Board.
