Students Taking Action on Darfur

THE DARFUR SURVIVAL CAMPAIGN

PHR's Darfur Survival Campaign presses for urgently needed security in Darfur, Sudan, including the deployment of the joint African Union-United Nations force of 26,000 peacekeeping troops as authorized by UN Security Council Resolution 1796. In addition, the Campaign insists on compensation and restitution for survivors.

Overview

Unbelievably, despite a promise to deploy a UN peacekeeping force, condemnations by members of the UN Security Council, and a referral of the situation in Darfur to the International Criminal Court, the Government of Sudan continues its assault on the people of Darfur. We continue to hear of attacks on villages which send thousands of people fleeing across the border into Chad to seek refuge and security.

Five years on, the conflict in Darfur has claimed between 300,000 and 400,000 lives, lost to violence, disease and starvation. More than 2.5 million people are displaced. More than 2 million are displaced within Darfur and over 300,000 more are refugees in neighboring Chad.

These displaced Darfurians face a host of difficulties: their homes and villages have been destroyed; they are at constant risk of continued attack; and they suffer from physical injuries and psychological trauma. You can use your unique voice, as a future health professional, to stand up for the protection of these innocent civilians and argue for their basic human rights.
