Adequate access to medicines is a critical component of a high quality health system and an essential requirement for the right to health. AGHA focused their research on key medicines used to treat malaria, pneumonia and other opportunistic infections, because these diseases represent the largest disease burdens in Uganda.
- Malaria is the leading cause of illness and death in Uganda, killing 320 people per day and making up half of the country’s disease burden.
- Acute respiratory illnesses are the second leading cause, making up 14% of the disease burden, while also contributing to HIV/AIDS mortality and morbidity.
