KENYA

About PHR's Work in Kenya

The Kenya Health Rights Advocacy Forum (HERAF) is a collaborative venture between Physicians for Human Rights, the Kenya Human Rights Commission, and health workers, health consumers and activists across Kenya.

HERAF combines the strengths of human rights and health communities in Kenya by mobilizing health professionals to support HIV/AIDS policies consistent with the best public health and human rights principles. Our strategy is to mobilize a health professional constituency that can employ their unique and powerful knowledge to increase understanding by policy makers of the need for a vigorous, well-financed, and science-based approach to the AIDS pandemic.

We have established a health worker-led steering committee to guide in this process. HERAF is also actively seeking official endorsement from health worker associations, health and human rights NGOS, and Persons Living With AIDS (PLWA) groups to make this a collaborative and integrated network.

HERAF Vision: A Kenya where health is recognized as a fundamental human right, with access to equitable, affordable health services for all

HERAF Mission: To monitor and advocate for the provision of equitable health services through community and health provider partnerships, utilizing a rights-based approach

HERAF Overarching Goal: Ensuring the recognition of health as a fundamental human right in Kenya

HERAF Activities Include:

  • Trainings, Workshops and Conferences
  • Forums and Discussions
  • Policy Analysis and Action Plan Creation
  • Media Outreach
  • Health Student Leadership Building
  • Networking and Coalition Building
