Reuniting Families Separated by War

During the civil war in El Salvador in the 1980s, thousands of children were separated from their parents. Many were forcibly taken from their families by the military, while others were lost in the chaos of combat.

Yvonne Milewski

Yvonne Milewski is an assistant professor of forensic pathology and neuropathology at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston Texas, where she is also Deputy Chief Medical Examiner. Prior to this recent appointment, she was at the office of Chief Medical Examiner of New York City for twelve years, the last five of which she was the Medical Examiner in charge of the Bronx borough branch of that agency.  Included during her tenure at the NYC Medical Examiners office was the year immediately following the World Trade Center attacks, during which that agency took on massive efforts of victim examination and identification.  In 2004, Dr. Milewski and forensic scientists from PHR exhumed and identified the remains of six of the "Ogoni Nine" activists executed in 1995 during the regime of the late General Sani Abacha.  Milewski's additional forensic experience in human rights investigations abroad includes participating in the exhumation and examination of mass graves in Bosnia and Kosovo, which resulted in her submitting evidence to the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in the Hague at several trials.
